Out of the cities in America with population greater than 500,000, here are the cities with the fewest violent crimes per capita:

  1. El Paso
  2. San Diego
  3. Mesa
  4. San Jose
  5. Las Vegas
  6. New York
  7. Austin
  8. San Francisco

The five most violent cities were Memphis, Detroit, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Kansas City.

The cities with the fewest property crimes per capita were:

  1. El Paso
  2. Boston
  3. San Diego
  4. New York
  5. Mesa
  6. Chicago
  7. Los Angeles
  8. Las Vegas

The only cities overlapping on the two lists are El Paso, San Diego, Las Vegas, and New York, where you are very unlikely to be made a victim of either type of crime.

The cities with the most property crimes are very different from the cities with the most violent crimes. Denver, Portland, Seattle, Memphis, and San Francisco bring up the rear. Even though San Francisco has very little violent crime, its property crime rates are in the bottom five.
