Insights—Gambling Prevalence by State

Here is a list of all the insights pages on the site.

While gambling has become more socially accepted in the United States in recent decades (particularly sports gambling), it's still considered one of the major vices. There are many different types of gambling, and the activity is regulated at a state level, not a federal level, which has resulted in a patchwork of applicable gambling laws across the United States. Despite this complexity, there are six states where things are very clear one way or the other.

States where gambling is 100% illegal:

States where gambling is 100% legal:

Full lists of gambling laws are available, detailing the minutiae of state gambling laws. However, we thought it'd be more interesting to measure an effective proxy: the number of casinos by state. Data, which comes from economic data provider World Population Review, is interesting because of the wide variance in casino prevalence. Eight states have at least thirty casinos, while twenty-one have under five!

States with the most casinos:

  1. Nevada, 232
  2. Oklahoma, 143 (surprising that anything is close to Nevada)
  3. California, 86
  4. Minnesota, 38
  5. Colorado, 35

States with the fewest casinos (not counting states where casinos are illegal, where there are obviously zero):

  1. Texas (despite its origination of Texas Hold 'Em Poker and legendary status as a road game destination!)
  2. Maine
  3. Rhode Island
  4. Connecticut
  5. Alaska
  6. (all have two each)

Additionally, despite the legality of casino gambling in each state, Kentucky, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and Vermont do not seem to have any casinos. This could be due to local or state government hostility, as building a casino is not a small project and requires a great deal of cooperation between developers and governmental authorities.
