Insights—The Relationship Between Politics and Population

Here is a list of all the insights pages on the site.

We learned something interesting from the previous exploration, which was that almost no big cities have a Republican majority. Clearly there is some kind of correlation between the size of the city and the proportion of Democrats in that city, a very direct relationship. Let's explore this a bit further.

We'll break down the cities into groups, starting with our "small large cities" and working our way up to the biggest. As we go, we'll see how the political demographics change.

Population Range Number of Cities Mean City's % of Democrats % with Republican Majority
50,000-100,000 485 55% 33%
100,000-250,000 231 56% 22%
250,000-500,000 51 58% 20%
500,000-1,000,000 27 66% 7%
1,000,000+ 10 67% 0%

It looks like a population of 500,000 is the breaking point, past which Republicans jump ship and flee for the suburban and rural areas. It would take a political scientist to answer why, but it's a fascinating tidbit of pointless knowledge!

If you're curious, the cities with 500,000+ people and Republican majorities are just Fort Worth, TX and Oklahoma City, OK.
