Somewhat in keeping with our posts about food and water quality, in this post we'll talk about another health related topic, air quality. Air quality is essential to some people for health reasons. But even if you don't have health problems, bad air can cause allergies as well as lead to the development of more serious issues.
We'll cover US states with the best and worst air quality. Let's start with the top five with the best:
There aren't too many surprises in this list. Hawaii is known for its unspoiled environment, and while a lot of Alaska's land has been polluted by oil and gas, the air has been unaffected—and surely benefits from the state's extraordinarily low population density. Maine, New Hampshire, and Wyoming are also known for having lots of uninhabited land, and relatively few industrial processes to cause air pollution.
Here are the five states with the worst air quality:
This list is a bit more surprising because Arizona is generally considered a healthy place—the dry air can be good for joint issues, and it is a common retirement destination. However, bad air, desert dust and smoke are trapped in Arizona's low-elevation major metros by the surrounding mountains. Nevada suffers from similar issues. California's infamous vehicle congestion, as well as wildfires, cause its poor ranking.
